International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia

On the occasion of the ‘International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia’ (IDAHO) on 17 May, the British Ambassador to Lebanon Frances Guy met with the Lebanese NGO ‘Helem’, headed by its Executive Director Charbel Maydaa, to discuss human rights issues related to IDAHO.

During the meeting, Ambassador Guy stressed that ‘Human rights are fundamental to British values and enshrined in international law. They encourage respect for individuals and are the foundation of democratic and stable societies’. ‘The FCO activities are often targeted at promoting human rights and preventing discrimination on any grounds including on the basis of gender, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, race, age etc.  ‘she added.

Guy also said that 'The 2010 Human Rights Command Paper, which the Foreign Secretary William Hague launched in March, details ‘our human rights work around the world and our assessment of the human rights situation in a number of countries of concern. This includes a section on LGBT issues’.
